Prius NY TaxiWell according to my wife I am a redard! Spell Check it.  So I’ve read a story about various City Governments trading in their large sized Ford or GM sedan’s for the goofy little Prius.  So I tried to ponder this little gem, “If all the gas guzzling American Taxi’s were magically transformed into Toyota Prius’?  How Much gas would be saved?”  So we begin a thought process that may explode my brain!

On second thought let’s just say all the Taxis in New York; that take less brain power (and I could find that total).  So the great city of New York covers about the same size of Los Angeles, but has 56% more people.  I looked it up on Wiki…boooya!  That makes for not only Taxis but a whole barrage of service cars.   According to Ask.Yahoo.Com, there are 12,779 yellow buggers nickel and dimming you.

The regular Ford Crown Victoria gets 11 MPG.  The Prius gets 46 MPG according to Fuel Economy.gov.  I know crown-vic-taxithere are taxi’s that get better gas mileage, but then there are cars that get worse.  So this seems like a nice middle point.  A taxi averages 70,000 miles per year. Multiply that by 12,779 Taxis and you get 894,530,000 miles.  The circumference of the Earth is 24,881 miles.  So one poor stinky New York Taxi driver could circle the earth 35,952 times?  E-mail me if that’s wrong!

So, finally how much damn gas would be saved if I could do magic?  Ok 894 million miles divided by the shitty 05_20_07_ob_1Crown Vitoria gas mileage equals 81,320,909 gallons of gas used; Good Lord!  The Prius would go the same mileage as the Crown Vic’s on only 19,446,304 gallons of gas.  This would be a 76% reduction.  We are talking a savings of some real dough: $123,749,210.  Sweet!

So what’s the moral of the story? Investing in current, more environmentally friendly technology could save big cash.  Too bad we are fat consumer pigs.

But that is just the tip of the iceberg.  There are over 20k service vehicles, 10k O.G. Town Cars, and some limo’s (the stretch Hummers have got to get incredible fuel economy numbers).  This brings us to 50k business vehicles in New York.  Ok my head has now been exploded; go ahead and do that math yourself!
